‘Elections Are Something to Celebrate’: Officials Discuss Election Security

A bipartisan group of current and former Pennsylvania officials recently came together to offer a simple message: Pennsylvania’s elections are safe and secure.

“How many of you have trust in the elections?” asked former Pennsylvania Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, with the majority of attendees raising their hands.

Joining Corbett at the event — held by Keep Our Republic, Dauphin County Bar Association and Saul Ewing LLP — were Cumberland County Commissioner Jean Foschi, Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt and the Hon. Robert Graci, a retired state Superior Court judge.

“I assure you, (mail in ballots) are secure,” Foschi told attendees at the Sept. 23 “Trust in Our Elections: A Community Conversation” forum at Widener University Commonwealth Law. “They are held under extreme security, under extreme observation. Your mail-in ballot is safe.”

The panel of election experts and officials explained the tried-and-tested systems that ensure votes are cast fairly and counted correctly. They stressed that the state has implemented a range of measures to ensure every aspect of the election process, from voter registration to the certification of results, is both safe and secure.

“Elections are something we should celebrate,” Secretary Schmidt said at the Sept. 23 forum.
